Camden Car Accident Lawyers: Child Safety Restraint in the US Declines
January 13, 2017
The National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported some shocking news when it comes to child safety. Appropriate use of child safety restraints in vehicles is on the decline. The proper use of seat belts, car seats, and booster seats for children ages four to seven has fallen to 44.5 percent in 2015 from 46.3 percent in 2013.
The NHTSA reported that in 2000, the use of child safety seats reduced injuries and fatalities among children ages four to seven by 25 percent. So with indisputable proof that kids are safer when properly restrained in the car, why would parents take a chance? In most cases, it is not that parents choose to forego child restraints altogether, it is that they are not using them correctly.
Nearly 40 percent of children in the NHTSA study were using the wrong seat or facing the child in the wrong direction. Children’s height and weight determines their seat and placement in a vehicle. Some children were put in booster seats too soon, not restrained properly, or not restrained at all. Children that are not properly restrained can be ejected from vehicles during a car accident.
Resources Exist for Parents
With auto accidents as the leading cause of fatalities for children 13 and under, it is every parent’s job to secure their child properly in the car. Putting children in the right seat, the right way, is the key to keeping them safe. The NHTSA, Safe Kids Worldwide, and your child’s pediatrician are all good resources for determining which seat is right for your child at their current age.
It is important to remember that as your child grows, their safety needs do as well. Stay up to date on which restraint options are best for your child’s height and weight. Parents also need to stay on top of child safety equipment recalls by registering their safety seats with the retailer and manufacturer.
