New Jersey and Philadelphia Personal Injury Lawyers Discuss Rise in Bicycle Related Injuries
October 05, 2015
The number of Americans who are riding their bikes regularly has been growing steadily in recent years. This trend is having a positive impact on people’s health, as well as the environment. Bicycling has significant cardiovascular benefits, and helps people reach and/or maintain a healthy weight. The downside is that the rate of bicycle related accidents is rising just as steadily.
According to research conducted by scientists at the University of California San Francisco, the incidence of bicycle injuries that require hospital stays is growing. Data was complied from 100 emergency departments across the country where people were treated for bicycle related injuries from 1998 to 2013. Over the course of the 15 year study period, there was a 28 percent increase in the number of cyclists who were injured. There was an increase in the rate of injuries from 96 per 100,000 cyclists to 123 per 100,000 cyclists. In addition, there was a 120 percent increase in hospitalizations among cyclists. This suggests a need for more aggressive safety measures in order to keep up with the growing interest in bicycle riding, particularly in urban areas.
Americans over 45 years of age seem to be the population that sustains the most injuries. In 2013, 65 percent of bicycle related hospital stays were older cyclists. The percentage of Americans who suffered injuries almost doubled from 1998 to 2013. Safety outreach efforts and additional investments in things like bike lanes could prevent many of these accidents from continuing to happen.
