Most Dangerous Highways in New Jersey

January 25, 2020

If asked about the most dangerous highways in New Jersey, most residents would guess the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. In 2018, the Garden State Parkway held the unfortunate top spot with 10,363 crashes, which involved 22 fatalities. The New Jersey Turnpike ranked second with 7,777 crashes and 15 fatalities. Motorists might find themselves surprised to learn which other routes made the most dangerous highways list.

  • Route 1: In 2018, there were 6,915 crashes on Route 1, with 12 deaths. The highway is full of traffic signals, intersections, and parking lots for shopping centers and office buildings, with numerous exit and entrance ramps. The most dangerous section of this 65-mile highway runs through Mercer and Middlesex Counties.
  • I-80: There were 4,722 crashes along I-80 in 2018, with approximately 25 percent causing injuries and 13 fatalities. The area with the highest number of collisions is between Paterson and Woodland Park.
  • Route 9: In 2018, there were 4,405 crashes, with roughly one-quarter of them involving injuries and 14 fatalities.
  • I-287: This interstate connects the New Jersey Turnpike with the New York State Thruway, so commuters and commercial trucks are both heavy users. The 2018 total of 3,550 collisions and seven fatalities had its highest numbers in Middlesex and Somerset County.
  • Route 46: One of the state’s older and more narrow highways, Route 46 is chocked with shopping malls, traffic lights, and an abundance of side streets. While there were 3,344 crashes in 2018, many occurred in Little Falls near the Route 3 junction.
  • I-295: New Jersey workers commuting to Philadelphia know the dangers of this incredibly congested highway. There were 3,220 crashes in 2018, with 11 fatalities. Currently, the Department of Transportation is trying to improve the situation by rebuilding junctions where crashes often occur.
  • Route 22: This highway is full of strip malls, meaning lots of vehicles entering and exiting, as well as numerous side streets. There were 3,277 crashes in 2018, and one-fourth of them resulted in injuries.
  • Route 130: This route between Middlesex County and Salem County experienced 3,013 crashes in 2018, with 14 fatalities. Although other dangerous highways have seen reductions in the number of fatalities in recent years, the number of those killed on Route 130 has increased.
  • Route 27: This route changes from two to four lanes as it passes through various municipalities and business districts. There were 2,939 collisions in 2018, with 11 fatalities. The area with the highest traffic volume and accident rate is around Rahway.
