Preventing Winter Slip and Fall Accidents

February 06, 2018

Although spring is just around the corner, January and February are the coldest months of the year, a factor that may contribute to dangerous walking conditions during periods of inclement weather. To avoid injuries associated with slip and fall accidents, the following tips and precautions should be kept in mind:

Plan Ahead

If you know that you will be traveling during periods of sleet, snow, or ice, give yourself sufficient time to make it to your destination safely. Establish a route and make changes during dangerous conditions if alternatives are available.

Wear Appropriate Winter Clothing

While it is common sense to wear outdoor apparel that includes a heavy coat, hat, and gloves, during the winter months, shoes are important too. When choosing an appropriate winter shoe, look for a shoe that has a grooved, rubber sole, as it will provide traction on icy surfaces. Plastic or leather soles have very little traction that may result in a loss of balance.

Step Carefully and Avoid Hazards

When walking on surfaces covered in snow, pay attention to your surroundings and step carefully, as ice and uneven surfaces may be hidden underneath layers of snow. Take small steps and walk slowly to prevent slipping. If possible, avoid carrying unnecessary items, as they may make balance more difficult. Rather than keeping your hands in your pockets, wear gloves and keep your hands out to maintain balance when walking. If you need to use an assistive device while walking, such as a cane or walker, tread carefully and invest in rubber, ice-gripping tips for additional stability and traction.

Tips for Walking on Ice

There may be situations where you have no other choice than to walk on an icy surface. To prevent injury, stay sharp and focused. If you are struggling even when taking short steps, try walking flat-footed by bending slightly, and shuffle slowly along for stability.

Know Your Rights

Premises liability laws require that property owners maintain reasonable safety standards during the winter months to reduce the risk of injury. If you or someone you know has experienced personal injury as the result of negligence while at a property or business other than your own, it is important that you speak with a qualified slip and fall lawyer.
