Speeding Tickets Increase When Speed Limit is Reduced

In one northern New Jersey town, the Mayor sought to reduce speed limits on local roads to reduce car accidents, especially those involving pedestrians in the area. While the goal is safety, the byproduct in that specific town is more traffic tickets.

In 2018, 13 motorists were stopped between February 15 and June 30. In 2019, that number increased to 148 motorists. Although this may be alarming to some residents, the mayor stated that it was done with safety in mind. The town mayor stated that regular drivers were given much notice about the impending change in the speed limit before the change. No statistics regarding accidents were released with the report on traffic stops. The mayor stated there were several serious accidents involving pedestrians who were struck on those four roads in the past five years.

Speeding Tickets and Financial Benefits to Municipality

The mayor pointed out that the town does not reap all the financial benefits of the fines that must be paid by motorists when they pay traffic tickets. The revenue collected from the traffic tickets is also shared with the county and the state. Traffic tickets in New Jersey can range anywhere between $85 to $420, depending on the severity of the offense. Lowering Speed Limits

Another neighboring New Jersey town is also considering lowering the speed limit to 25 miles per hour. Presumably this will be very unpopular, and it seems to be an even more severe change than in the previous town where the speed limits were reduced, but not all to the same level of 25 miles per hour. New Jersey drivers must be aware of changing speed limits, especially on small neighborhood streets and county roads where the speed limit may fluctuate depending on the population in the area and how close the homes are to the road.
