Staying Healthy and Safe During Business Travel
February 12, 2019
When most people think of job-related injuries qualifying for Workers’ Compensation, they think of injuries occurring on the job site. While most work-related injuries do occur in the workplace, injuries incurred while traveling on business may also qualify for Workers’ Compensation. However, no one wants to get hurt on the job, especially while away from home. Good planning and taking precaution can minimize the risks of hurting yourself while traveling on business.
Plan Appropriately
Planning is always important, and never more so than during the holidays when airports and public transportation are more crowded than usual. If you are traveling abroad, make sure your company arranges for a car service to pick you up at the airport and deliver you to your hotel or other destination. If you are expected to hire a taxi, never use an unlicensed service.
When traveling internationally, ensure your company checks the U.S. Department of State’s travel information for the countries in which you are visiting and registers your visit. Not only will you find the best travel advice, but you may also learn about travel advisories specific to certain regions of these countries.
Pack Correctly
Take advantage of carry-on bags rather than packing a large, heavy suitcase. Carry only your essentials in carry-on bags, and avoid bringing any expensive items that are not absolutely necessary for your trip. That includes using designer carry-ons, since the use of expensive bags may attract the attention of thieves.
Wear the Right Clothes
If you are traveling on flights with layovers, make sure you dress comfortably for your trip. Business casual is often your best bet, since you do not want to wear constricting clothing that can tire your body out. Make sure your shoes are comfortable and avoid high heels. Since the weather can change quickly depending on your destination, always take along a light coat or jacket.
Continue Exercising
Just because you are traveling on business does not mean you have to forsake exercising, although you may have to change your routine. Most hotels have exercise rooms available, with some offering their clients access to local gyms. A good workout not only keeps you in shape, but also helps to relieve the stress of traveling for business. Meditation is also a good form of stress release for practitioners.
