Mark is a veteran trial attorney, born in Jersey City, NJ in August of 1960. A son of a Judicial Secretary, he grew up spending summers in the Hudson County Courthouse Building, where both his parents worked. A graduate of Rutgers University (B.A. 1982 in Economics), Mark did not immediately proceed to law school after graduation. Rather, he spent time working in the public sector, including 3 years as an employee of the United States Senate.
Mark is a graduate of the Delaware Law School, class of 1989, where he was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society. After graduation, he served as a Law Clerk to Rudolph J. Rossetti, then the Presiding Judge of Camden County’s Civil Division. While clerking, Mark married his wife, Nancy (also an attorney) in March, 1990.
Subsequent to his clerkship, Mark joined the litigation department of South Jersey’s biggest law firm, Horn Kaplan, Goldberg, Gorny & Daniels, which at that time had over 75 attorneys based in their Atlantic City office. Within 4 months of starting, Mark successfully completed his first jury trial, one of many, on behalf of various insurance companies including Aetna, Liberty Mutual, Allstate & State Farm.
In 1993, Mark left the “big firm” life, returning to work as Plaintiff’s counsel at a firm he had worked for while attending law school, Ballen & Gertel, joining his wife who also worked there at the time. While there, he tried many cases on behalf of injured parties, including prevailing on a wrongful death claim, in which there were no witnesses and very little evidence.
Between 1998 and 2017, Mark returned to handing cases on behalf of Defendants, most of whom were insured by State Farm Insurance. This included car accidents, dog bite cases, slip and fall incidents, and other insurance based claims. During this time he tried cases in every courthouse in South Jersey including Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean, Burlington, Camden, Atlantic, Gloucester, Cumberland, Cape May &
Salem.
Mark is admitted to practice in New Jersey & Pennsylvania (inactive) as well as all Federal Courts including the Third Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. When not in court, Mark is also active in both the legal community and in various civic activities. He is a long-time member of the Camden County Bar Association, having previously served on its Board of Trustee’s. He is also currently serving his
second 3-year term on the District IV Ethics Committee which serves Camden & Gloucester Counties. Mark has also served as a Judge for the local High School Mock trial competition.
Civically, Mark has been a member of Kiwanis International, a worldwide service organization serving the needs of children for over 25 years. He is also President of his Homeowners Association, in a community of over 1200 homes.
